14 April 2015 Talk by Mary McLaren and Keisha Forteau of Healthwatch Richmond
- Established in 2013 via the Health and Social Care Act 2012 there is a Healthwatch team in each London borough. They took over from LinK, to engage with the local community about health and social services
- They speak to groups like ours, to find out what is good and bad about local services and what needs improving; they feed their views into the commissioning of services; they signpost people to the relevant social care service; they are responsible for listening to children and young people and are trained to recognise safeguarding issues.
- They have the power to Enter and View social care services and report on it to the services manager. For example, if you are concerned about the care someone may be receiving in a residential home, contact Healthwatch who can report on their findings and make recommendations. Reports may be shared amongst the Care Quality Commission, LBRUT, Richmond Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), NHS England and Healthwatch England.
- Send your contact details (email or postal address) via http://www.healthwatchrichmond.co.uk/ and 020 8099 5335 to go on their mailing list.
- Recent projects include
- Visiting West Middlesex Hospital to assess compassionate care. Concerns included meals and discharge communication.
- Visiting a number of GP practices looking at the appointments booking system
- Identifying a loophole whereby they cannot view services in supported living projects. This is being followed up nationally
- Completed reports are available to view on their web pages
- They have no recorded concerns about the standard of diabetes services in the borough
- Alastair Mackinley had previously suggested a borough-wide meeting of people with diabetes to talk about GP services. Oliver McKinley, Commissioner for diabetes services is keen to meet with our group, the CCG and Healthwatch – watch this space….
- Where safeguarding issues are identified the public can be directed to the Safeguarding Team in the Civic Centre, for prompt action.
